This canvas has very substantial age (and the nails are oval-headed), and it is probably a late 19th Century work. No signature has been detected. The skill of the artist is apparent - this is not the work of an amateur or an unknown. It was obtained by us unframed from an East Coast auction house; no provenance is available. The manner in which the background is painted is probably a significant clue.
Information or informed conjecture about the attribution of this painting would be welcome.
