Popular watercolorist El Meyer
lived on the Russian River and often painted scenes plein air throughout Marin and Sonoma Counties. His works were a favorite of local northcoast art collectors.


In his book, Watercolor Painting on Location El enthusiastically promotes the idea of painting plein air. "There is no question that painting a watercolor on location can provide the artist with more inspiration than can be found any other way. All of our knowledge suddenly comes into focus when we observe nature's textures, patterns, and shapes."

El's book is an excellent guide to plein air painting, discussing many of the eliments and issues encountered by both serious and recreational painters.

Elmer Meyer 1910-2001 - obituary

MEYER, Elmer (El) Frederick Passed away December 19, 2001 in Sebastopol at the age of 91. Elmer was born on May 24, 1910 in Twin Falls, ID.

During his life he worked as a commercial artist, lithographer, and watercolorist. El Meyer said; "Art is the thing I’ve dedicated my life to, I’m committed and addicted to making art." He studied painting at the California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco Art Institute). Over the years his works have won numerous awards and have been widely exhibitd.

Married for 46 years, his wife Hazel passed away in 1988. He continued to reside in the Forestville home he built until shortly before his death.

A man of many talents, he was also a musician, teacher, designer and builder who inspired many he knew.

He is survived by his 3 children; daughter Roberta Ponce of San Mateo; son Gerald Meyer of Kingston, Jamaica; daughter Laurel Meyer of Forestville; brother Helmuth Meyer of Orland, CA; 5 grandchildren: Frederica Garcia, Elizabeth Ponce, Cindy Cox, Robert Meyer, and Lynne Meyer; 2 great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Andrew Cox; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements under the direction of PLEASANT HILLS MEMORIAL PARK & MORUARY, Sebastopol.
