Millard Sheets, Pleasures Along the Beach, is a 16' x 40' glass tile mosaic now adorning the entrance to the Hilbert Museum.
Millard Sheets created it in 1969 for a Home Savings & Loans building at Wilshire and 26th Street

Mark and Janet Hilbert,
founders of the Hilbert Museum of California Art

Since buying their first California Scene watercolor
the Hilberts caught fire. As they collected paintings, they learned more and more. In time, they wanted to share their collection and their passion and built California's newest art museum, dedicated to California Art.
California Scene Painting does not have a single founding father, but if an election were held, Millard Sheets would be among the very few who would be thought worthy of such an honor. Millard Sheets was a highly influential artist and teacher, and he helped define the California Scene Painting Movement. Beyond his many watercolors, he is also fondly remembered for his large-scale building-mounted mosaics from the mid-20th century.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, San Dimas Train Station, 1933
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, San Dimas Train Station, 1933, The Hilbert Collection
Just months before the San Dimas Train Station burned to the ground, Millard Sheets painted this historic train station. It had been built in the 1880's by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway anticipating San Dimas growing into a large agricultural based suburb of Los Angeles. Sheets had grown up a few miles away. He had seen this train station many times from the train as he traveled to and from his home.
This article contains photo images from the Millard Sheets paintings currently on exhibit at the Hilbert Museum of California Art in Orange County. The museum contains a large collection of California Scene Painting including many by Millard Sheets. The information underneath each photo is from the museum placards.

Some of the images pictured here were taken with my cell phone while in the museum, and my image is reflected in the glass. Please do your best to ignore my reflection and focus on Sheets' composition and colors.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, California Cotton Pickers, 1929
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, California Cotton Pickers, 1929, The Hilbert Collection
In 1929, cotton was an important crop in California and remains so today. For a brief time beginning in the 1920's, black field hands were brought to California from the American South to pick cotton. The effort at importing cheap labor failed, as the workers quickly found less labor intensive and better paying jobs. Hence, the practice of importing black laborers from the south was abandoned. California Cotton Pickers is an impressionist painting utilizing loose thick brushwork. Sheets, like many artists in Europe and America focused on the lives of poor people doing menial jobs.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, One Sunday Morning, Chavez Ravine, c1929
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, One Sunday Morning, Chavez Ravine, c1929, gift of the Hilbert Collection
In 1929, Chavez Ravine was a hilly area just north of downtown Los Angeles, and was home to a number low-income Hispanic families. Artists such as Sheets, Milford Zornes, Orpha Klinker and Sam Hyde Harris painted scenes here recording the beauty of these closely knit ethnic neighborhoods. Sheets' One Sunday Morning (Chavez Ravine) is one such scene. Later in the 1950's, a big controversy ended with much of the Chavez Ravine area being sold to make room for a new stadium for the newly minted LA Dodgers.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Circus Ponies, 1935
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Circus Ponies, 1935, The Hilbert Collection
Circus Ponies is yet another of the many paintings by Millard Sheets expressing his life long love of horses. The reference to the circus is not known. This painting was once owned by one of the Marx Brothers, Zeppo.
Millard Sheets was born in 1907 in Pomona, CA, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. His mother died just a few days after his birth and he was raised by his grandparents on a ranch near Pomona. Growing up on a ranch, he had a life long love of horses. As a young child, his talents and love of art were apparent. At age 14, he took private art lessons and while still a teenager, his watercolors were exhibited in the annual California Water Color Society show. After graduation from Pomona High School, he was given a scholarship to Los Angeles' Chouinard Art Institute. Nelbertina Chouinard, founder of the Chouinard Art Institute, recognized Millard's talent and hired him to teach watercolor even before he graduated.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, The Hale and Norcross Mine, 1939
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, The Hale and Norcross Mine, 1939, The Hilbert Collection
The Hale and Norcross Mine was founded in 1859, a silver and gold mine in Nevada's rich Comstock mining district centered in Virginia City, Nevada. In 1895, the owners and managers of the mine were found guilty of diverting millions of dollars for their own benefit. One of the investors who lost a fortune was Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, At the Mission Gate, 1929
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, At the Mission Gate, 1929, The Hilbert Collection
At the Mission Gate is an oil painting on board, with exceptional contrasts in color, character suggestion, and flow of composition. 1929 was an exceptional year for Millard Sheets. Although he had had not yet finished his studies at the Chouinard Art Institute, he was given a solo show at the prestigious Newhouse Galleries in Los Angeles. Also in 1929, he won the Edgar B. Davis prize in Texas, which came with a cash award large enough to enable Millard to travel to South America, Central America and Europe for nearly a year. In Paris, he studied lithography and painted at the Salon d'Automne, the premier exhibition for locale for French Modern Art.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, The Gleaners 2, 1939
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, The Gleaners 2, 1939, The Hilbert Collection
The Gleaners, California shows an ancient practice at work in the 20th century. Gleaners gather up the small amount left after the harvest has been completed. The silhouetted figures in the foreground are the nameless faceless gatherers living on the margins in a lush and productive farmland.
In 1929 at age 22, Millard won a cash prize in Texas enabling him to travel for a year, spending time in Central and South America and then on to Europe. In 1930, Sheets returned to Los Angeles and quickly rising to become a dynamic member of the LA art community. Also in 1930, he married Mary Baskerville. In 1932, he taught art at Claremont College. He was also an adept architect.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Beer for Prosperity, 1933
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Beer for Prosperity, 1933, Crain Collection
in 1933, the 21st Amendment ended Prohibition. Beer and alcohol production, sales and consumption was once again legal. The brightly lit bar in Beer for Prosperity shows off patrons have come out of the shadows, now willing to drink in the light. Speak Easys were no longer necessary.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Grocery Interior, 1930's
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Grocery Interior, 1930's, gift of the Hilbert Collection
Long before our modern large grocery stores, with shopping carts, aisle after aisle of endless choices, and check out lanes with scanners and credit card charging stations, Grocery Interior shows a humble small grocery store with the owner/clerk serving a single customer. At the door, the next customer is about to enter. When it was painted, no one thought this was quaint, just the way it was.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Tending Goats, 1928
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Tending Goats, 1928, The Hilbert Collection
Done in 1928 when Millard Sheets was 21 years old, Tending Goats was done while he was still a student and a watercolor teacher at LA's renowned Chouinard Art Institute. Already at a young age, Sheets demonstrates a mastery of watercolor. This scene was probably done at a local farm in Pomona.
During World War II, he, along with fellow watercolorist Milford Zornes, Sheets was an artist-correspondent for Life and the United States Army Air Forces in India and Burma. He witnessed horrors of war and recorded scenes of famine and death. This wartime experience informed his post-war art, which for a number of years was expressed with dark hues and depressing subjects. In the 1950's his work shifted toward brighter colors as he traveled worldwide.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Pulling Cable, Camp Roberts, 1944
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Pulling Cable, Camp Roberts, 1944, The Hilbert Collection
Pulling Cable, Camp Roberts shows a busy scene at this U.S. Army training camp during WW II. The camp was opened in 1940 and became one of the busiest training facilities during the war. Located near Paso Robles, the camp also was home to a large Army Hospital and was the location of prison camps for captured German and Italian soldiers. In 1942, Millard Sheets was made an artist-correspondent for Life Magazine, assigned to the China-Burma-India theater of war.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Migratory Camp Near Nipomo, 1938
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Migratory Camp Near Nipomo, 1938, The Hilbert Collection
Nipomo is a small town in San Luis Obispo County. It was here that Great Depression photographer Dorothea Lange took her famous photo called Migrant Mother. Like Dorothea Lange and so many WPA artists of the era, Millard Sheets showed great respect for poor people, how they lived and work. He strived to call attention to their plight without losing sight of their inherent dignity.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Beneath the Neon Glow, 1935
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Beneath the Neon Glow, 1935, The Hilbert Collection
Beneath the Neon Glow is a night scene in the Westlake Park District of LA. In the background is a partial view of the neon sign atop the William Penn Hotel. This scene is just steps away from the location of the Chouinard Art Institute where Sheets received a scholarship and was also teaching a class in watercolor. Sheets painted this watercolor scene while standing at the entrance to Chouinard.
In the 1950's through to the end of his life he influenced thousands of artists. As a teacher at the Chouinard Art Institute, the Otis Art Institute and Scripps College, and through his work directing the art exhibition at the Los Angeles County Fair for many years, he brought world class art to Southern California
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Hawaiian Waterfall, c1950
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Hawaiian Waterfall, c1950, The Hilbert Collection
Hawaiian Waterfall shows a scene aimed at mainlanders, advertising Hawaii. In 1950, United Airlines hired Millard Sheets to teach art at the University of Hawaii and create Island scenes for their advertising posters. Sheets moved his family to the Kona Coast where he rented a home and was in residence for an entire year.
Millard Sheets, The Old Canal at Hermosillo
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, The Old Canal at Hermosillo, 1952, The Hilbert Collection
In The Old Canal at Hermosillo, Millard Sheets uses a pointillist technique showing a pleasant scene of a vivid day in Mermosillo in the center of the Mexican state of Sonora. Several scenic palm tress, although graceful and beautiful, offer little shade for several figures trying to keep cool on the shadier side of the street.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Symphony Under the Stars, 1956
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Symphony Under the Stars, 1956, The Hilbert Collection
The Hollywood Bowl first opened in 1921 and became the most attended musical event venue in LA. In 1956, Sheets created this watercolor to be used as a Bowl program cover. In Symphony Under the Stars, the klieg lights beaming skyward, the rounded orchestra shell, the throngs of music lovers and blue reflecting pool all combine to make the Hollywood Bowl to be a happening scene.
In 1954, he was contracted to design more than 160 Home Savings and loan buildings throughout California and other states. Each of his designed buildings had a magnificent mosaic mural. One of these murals has now found a home on the west facade of the Hilbert Museum. Previously, Pleasures Along the Beach was located at the Home Savings in Santa Monica.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Women of Mali Africa, 1970
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, acrylic on canvas, Women of Mali Africa, 1970, Laguna Art Museum
In the later years of his career, Millard Sheets turned to using acrylic as a paint medium to steer clear of the toxic chemicals associated with oil paint. This masterful composition shows women seemingly graceful while doing the heavy labor of carrying water uphill.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Old House Tahiti, 1973
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Old House Tahiti, 1973, The Hilbert Collection
Since Paul Gauguin first arrived in Tahiti in 1890, artists have been drawn to these jewels in the South Pacific. In Old House, Tahiti Sheets paints a brilliantly colored scene with two Tahitian women in native clothing.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Japanese Farmhouse, 1970's
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Japanese Farmhouse, 1970's, The Hilbert Collection
Japanese Farmhouse is a marvelously colorful watercolor, done during one of Sheets' several visits to Japan. The colored geometric shapes of the fields gives this painting an appealing composition with a harmony of colors.

In 1960, Millard Sheets built his dream home on the cliffs above the Pacific just south of Anchor Bay in Mendocino County. In his last years, he was wheelchair bound. He died on March 31, 1989 at his sea side home.

Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Fishermen of Mazatlan, 1978
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Fishermen of Mazatlan, 1978, The Hilbert Collection
Fishermen of Mazatlan shows fishermen heading out in their pangas. Before Mazatlan became known as a major tourist destination, Mazatlan was known for its rich harvests of seafood, especially shrimp (camarones).
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Rocks of Lobos, 1980
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Rocks of Lobos, 1980,The Hilbert collection
Rocks of Lobos shows a scene from Point Lobos State Park, the jewel of the California Coast. Sheets dazzles the viewer with a multitude of colors accompanied with a flock of gulls.
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Mendocino Coastline, 1978
Millard Sheets, 1907-1989, Mendocino Coastline, 1978, The Hilbert Collection
Mendocino Coast shows "Barking Rocks" a small rocky island just off the cliffs by Millard Sheets' home in Anchor Bay, California, just north of Gualala. Millard and Mary Sheets bought their oceanfront property in 1960. Due to visits from a number of sea lions, Mary named the islet "Barking Rocks. Also in 1960, Walt Disney artist Joshua Meador bought a similar property just north of Mendocino in Caspar. Back in the Los Angeles Art scene, both artists most likely knew of each other. The concurrence of both artists buying similar seaside homes fifty miles apart is quite a coincidence. At present, we are aware of any evidence that Millard Sheets and Joshua Meador knew each other, but it bears out further investigation.

Bodega Bay Heritage Gallery ... Gallery Notes
We've been open one month ... Bodega Bay Heritage Gallery new home has been visited by art lovers near and far. Visitors are really surprised to find some of California's historic artists. Linda Sorensen is busy preparing for Art at the Source. Catalogues will soon be available and downloadable. She will have her OPEN STUDIO in her Graton Studio. Linda and I have reinvigorated our participation in the local Chamber of Commerce and want to encourage everyone to visit this year's Fisherman's Festival May 4-5.

A new book, "Rings of Fire" by Bodega Bay Heritage Gallery's friend, Larry Hughes tells the story of John W. Hilton's calcite mine during WWII. Its newly published and available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

John W. Hilton was not the Dean of the California Desert Painters, but he well could have been dubbed its Social Director. He arranged and many social events and painting expeditions. John had a magnetic personality, and his friends with many, including some notable celebrities such as President Dwight Eisenhower, Industrialist Howard Hughes, General George S. Patton and a host of painters including Maynard Dixon, Nicolai Fechin, Jimmy Swinnerton, Clyde Forsythe.

Having long been a rock hound in the desert areas surrounding Palm Springs, John W. Hilton mined optical grade calcite crystals during WWII. They were used in Polaroid's Optical Ring Anti-aircraft Gunsight, which radically improved the accuracy of anti-aircraft guns on U.S. bombers. These guns not only saved lots of air crew's lives, but radically improved the bombers efffectiveness. They really made a major contribution to winning the war. Rings of Fire by Lary J. Hughes tells this incredible story of how a desert artist came to help win the War.

Coming Soon! Great News for Bodega Bay, Rocker Oysterfeller's Seaside

Our Gallery Showroom and Linda Sorensen's Studio in Graton

Bodega Bay Heritage Gallery specializes in Historic California Paintings 1850-1950 and the contemporary art of Linda Sorensen.  Our gallery showroom and Linda's artist studio are open by appointment.  We ask that visitors wear masks and practice social distancing. Email, text or call us for an appointment.  As our collection is larger than what we have on display at any one time, we want to learn your interests and preferences. After listening to your wishes, we can have the paintings you want to view ready for your visit.

If you wish to sell a painting to us ...

At present, we are acquiring few paintings. We are interested in considering works by Joshua Meador, or exceptional paintings by a few other Historic California artists. We do not do miscellaneous consignments but do represent artist estates. We do not provide appraisal services.

DO NOT CALL AND EXPECT A THOUGHTFUL ANSWER REGARDING YOUR PAINTING (especially, do not leave a voicemail message requiring us to phone you), ... INSTEAD, Please EMAIL US (Art@BodegaBayHeritageGallery.com) along with a high resolution jpeg image of your painting. Include the name of the artist, its title, dimensions and condition. Please include any history or provenance. Rather than responding off the cuff, in a timely fashion we will read your note, do our homework, and write back and let you know if we wish to acquire your painting or we may give you our our ideas on how best to market your painting through other resources.
