Paul Starrett Sample 1896 - 1974
Early in the 1940's, Paul Sample was considered by Life Magazine as one of the foremost painters in America. Profiles of his work appeared in Art News, Esquire, Country Gentleman and American Artist. The Rural New England style dominated his work.

As a young man, Paul lived in many parts of the country and was an athlete and a musician at Dartmouth College, being a good boxer and saxophonist. His education was interrupted by a tour of duty in the Navy. After the war, he graduated from Dartmouth. He then was diagnosed with TB, and spent four years in a Sanitarium in the Adirondack Mountains where he decided he wanted to be a painter. Once recovered from his illness, he became a member of the faculty at the University of Southern California teaching art. In 1938, he moved back home to New England, and became an artist in residence at Dartmouth. Source: Askart.com
