Arizona saguaro cactus and mountains
Oil on canvas, 16 x 20
$1,200

Thomas L. Lewis was born in Texas, and owned a gallery in Taos, New Mexico. In the 1930's, he experimented with sepia tones and developed a range of colors well suited for depicting the deserts of the Southwest. During World War II, he put his sharp eye for color to work mixing paints for the camouflage division. After the war, he relocated to Taos, and became friends with Bert Phillips. This pair often headed out to the desert on painting excursions. Thomas and his wife Sallie were art enthusiasts which led to opening a gallery in Taos. They were the first to exhibit the art of Bill Moyers (not the journalist), an early member of the Cowboy Artists of America, and they used their gallery to promote the work of other New Mexico artists.
