Childe Hassam, a distinctively American Impressionist
you'll want to know by Daniel Rohlfing

Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was one of America's best Impressionists of the late 19tth and early 20th centuries. Along with Mary Cassatt, Henry Twachtman, Theodore Robinson, and J. Alden Weir, Childe Hassam was instrumental in popularizing impressionism among American collectors, art dealers and museums.

This is an hour-long video slide show showing 645 of his paintings.
I recommend that you view this video on YouTube on a large TV screen.
By sampling portions of it, you can gain an appreciation for
the range, skill and artistry of Childe Hassam.
His first name "Childe" is pronounced like the common noun "child." The name had belonged to one of his uncles. He was born in Boston on October 17, 1859, and was christened Frederick Childe Hassam. Childe discarded his first name "Frederick" early in his painting career.

His last name evolved from a long period of mispronounced usage. His father claimed that back in the 17th century, one of the family's ancestors had the name Horsham, but over time, repeated mispronunciation of the name eventually shortened it to Hassam. The accent is therefore on the first syllable.

Childe was an American New Englander through and through. His father's roots extended back to the year 1630 in Salem, Massachusetts; and later, one of Childe's ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. His mother's family was also deeply rooted in the American past. Rosa Delia Hawthorne was a distant relative of the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Childe was proud of his New England heritage and was was proud to proclaim himself an American patriot. Late in his career, his flag series of paintings bears witness to his strong vein of patriotism. One of these paintings, The Avenue in the Rain hung along side of President Barrack Obama's Oval Office desk for eight years.

The Avenue in the Rain was painted at the height of Hassam's popularity, and is one of some 30 related paintings of flag-decorated streets that he painted during and after the First World War, 1916-1919. Intensely patriotic, these "flag paintings" mirrored the the fervor of the American public as they faced, fought and overcame the Great War "over there."

The artist's most striking device in Avenue in the Rain is that the reds, whites and blues of the flags blend with the rain as if the blessings of freedom were raining on the citizens below. The tall thin horizontal dimension of the painting is meant to resemble a hanging flag.

Hassam was inspired for these paintings by a similar scene created by Claude Monet entitled Rue Montorgueil with Flags (pictured to the right) painted some 30 years earlier. Monet painted Rue Montogueil with Flags for the Exposition Universelle held in Paris after the Franco-Prussian War. Monet's painting is bursting forth with French flags expressing exuberance and joy.

Childe Hassam's flag paintings fit in well with his many paintings of the street scenes of New York. The avenue in Avenue in the Rain is Fifth Avenue which was frequently decorated with flags at a time when America was moving from being an isolated nation to becoming a major player on the world stage.

In Childe's early artistic life, he sought to make his name more distinctive. He dropped his first name Frederick and became Childe Hassam. Physically he was athletic, and he possessed a dark complexion with dark heavy eyebrows.

Childe had fun teasing people with the pronunciation of his name. They often struggled with how to pronounce his first name. But when confronted with the problem of how to pronounce "Hassam," people often thought the name to be of middle-eastern descent. Childe's sharp sense of humor played along with this misconception. In fun, he even added a crescent moon to his signature just to stoke mystery. Among friends, he had the nickname "Mawla" which in Arabic meant Lord or Master, a reference to the character Muley Abdul Hassan in Washington Irving's novel, Tales of the Alhambra.

At age 23, he had risen in the commercial art business and became a free-lance "black and white" man. He was known for illustrating children's stories for Harper's Weekly, Scribners Monthly and The Century.

A fellow art student named Edmund H. Garrett then invited Childe to join him for a two month long study trip in Europe where they visited the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain. The two young men in their mid 20's reveled in their adventure. Childe was especially impressed by J.M.W. Turner's watercolors.

After returning to Boston, Childe taught at the Cowles Art School and joined the "Paint and Clay Club," a group of Boston's artists, illustrators, sculptors and decorators. He enjoyed the camaraderie. He made many friends who were drawn to his outgoing self deprecating personality and his marvelously wicked wit. Artistically, Childe was influenced by the American painter William Morris Hunt who emphasized the Barbizon tradition of working outdoors in nature.

When Childe was 25, he married Kathleen Maude Doane. She managed the household, made all their travel arrangements and handled many other duties that fall to an artist's spouse (something I can appreciate).
It was at this time that Childe began painting cityscapes, including his Boston Common at Twilight which hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Childe and his impressionist friends took to heart all that they had learned of Impressionism from the French, but they applied it in American cities and landscapes. Monet even encouraged them that they had a new story to tell.

Childe was successful enough for him to move with his wife to Paris in 1886 where they had an apartment near the Place Pigalle, located near Sacre-Coeur at the bottom of Montmartre. Beyond painting Paris scenes, Childe and Kathleen Hassam enjoyed the Parisian life, socializing with French and American artists and with the American ex-patriot community.

Childe went to France to study at the Academie Julian and study with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. It didn't take long for Childe to admit to himself that formalized study didn't fit well with him. He transitioned to self study as soon as he could. He felt that the formalized routine of full time art school crushed his originality
.

He sent paintings back to Boston for sale, done at first with his characteristic brown palette. Sales were sufficient to allow him to remain in Paris into 1887.

New Britain Museum of American Art, Hartford, CT

In the Fall of 1887, Childe's signature style was born. He painted two versions of Grand Prix Day where he used a more French Impressionist palette, a lighter palette, using softer and more diffuse colors.

These scenes were brighter and were done with freer brushstrokes. Childe had been impressed and influenced by the French Impressionist paintings he had seen in local museums, galleries and exhibitions.

Similar to America's Kentucky Derby, The Grand Prix de Paris is more than just a horse race. Suspended during the Franco-Prussian War, the Grand Prix was cause for national celebration. In his painting, well dressed Parisians with white parasols, piled high on horse-drawn carriages, parade down the Champs-Elysées near the Arc de Triomphe.

Childe became friends with other American impressionists J. Alden Weir and John Henry Twachtman. Through them, he met other artists in a range of art societies and social clubs. He painted genteel scenes of New York within walking distance from his studio. He said, "New York is the most beautiful city in the world. There is no boulevard in all Paris that compares to our own Fifth Avenue ... the average American still fails to appreciate the beauty of his own country." Some might say his figures appear blurry, but Childe said he wanted to capture "humanity in motion." Today, these New York scenes are treasured by New Yorkers.

In the summers, Childe felt the need to escape the heat and humidity of the city. He often stayed on Appledore Island, the largest of the Isles of Shoals off New Hampshire. The island was an artist colony and provided a social life including a salon hosted by poet Celia Thaxter who drew in a community of artists, poets and writers. She also attracted buyers for the paintings of these artists. Childe thoroughly enjoyed the company and creativity these summer visits offered. He created many of his best impressionist paintings on Appledore Island.

In the mid 1890's, Childe and Kathleen visited Italy, painting in Rome, Venice and Florence. After a brief stay in Paris en route, they arrived back in New York in 1997. On their trip, Childe truly enjoyed spending many hours studying Italy's old masters in churches, galleries and museums.

Back home, Childe took part in the secession of Impressionists from the Society of American Artists, forming a new group called The Ten (pictured below). The ten had grown tired of the conservatism of the American Art establishment. The group held their own exhibitions and exhibited only through select galleries. They had success for about twenty years before dissolving.
But as with all art movements, the old gives way to the new. The impressionists and their paintings of a gentrified American scene were replaced with more lively and gritty urban scenes of the Ashcan School, with painters like Robert Henri and Edward Hopper. Movements in Modern Art also eroded Impressionism's appeal with the popular rise of the cubism of Picasso and the art of Maine's Marsden Hartley.

In 1919, Childe and Kathleen moved out of the city to East Hampton on Long Island. Childe's paintings still sold and he still received awards and praise, but he knew all too well his relevance was fading as the art world moved on. He died in 1935 at the age of 75.

Leon Lundmark did not arrive in California until after his 60th birthday, but during his few years as a California painter, he did some of his best work.

In a brief few years in his Altadena studio, he compiled a large body of work. His maritime paintings of California's Pacific shore were popular. From his home studio in Altadena just north of Pasadena, he exhibited his paintings with the California Art Club and had a one-person exhibition at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1939.

His obituary in the Pasadena Star News said Leon Lundmark won the first purchase prize in 1941 at the now famous annual Gardena High School Exhibition. This famous exhibition featured most of the elite Southern California painters of the time who donated one of their works to the school, many of which make up the exceptional Gardena High School Collection. (See our June 2016 Article).
Before coming to California, Leon traveled extensively, painting maritime scenes of all the world's oceans, seas and all five of America's Great Lakes. His paintings were exhibited widely, in 61 American cities and 12 European and Asian countries. He exhibited his works at the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Leon was born in Mörlunda, Sweden, just a little over 200 miles southwest of Stockholm, on May 28, 1875. He was the illegitimate son of Countess Hanna von Til and S. A. Johnson, and was educated in Stockholm at the Technical School and at the Stockholm Fine Art Academy.

When Leon was twenty years old, he emigrated to America, and settled near Chicago in Pullman, Illinois. There he worked in the Decoration Department of the Pullman shops painting Pullman railroad sleeper cars.

In his leisure time he painted, often scenes of the Lake Michigan shore. He participated in local art exhibitions, and six of his works were included in juried exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago between 1921 and 1924.

It was at these exhibitions that he was discovered by Mr. J. W. Young of the Young Art Gallery on Michigan Avenue. Over the next three years, the Young gallery sold 95 of Leon Lundmark's paintings, and a biography of Leon Lundmark was published in 1924, The Rise of Lundmark, Marine Painter.

For the rest of the 1920's Leon served as director of the Scandinavian-American Art Association in Chicago. In this capacity, he returned to Sweden to participate in the Swedish American Exhibition in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1923.

The many people who purchased Leon Lundmark's paintings includes a Who's Who of notable collectors, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, W.H. Dow, Mrs. F.W. Kellogg, and William Wrigley.

Bodega Bay Heritage Gallery is mostly online. We maintain a gallery showroom (by appointment only) at the Atelier One artist studios building in Graton, California, sharing space with Linda Sorensen's artist studio.

Our newsletter includes reports/articles about artists, museum exhibits, and other arts subjects, often with videos and links.

For the duration of the pandemic, we will observe safe mask wearing and social distance protocols. We do not transact financial business or collect data via our website. All client contact/information is via phone, text, email or in person by appointment.

If you wish to sell a painting to us ...

At present, we are acquiring few paintings. We are interested in considering works by Joshua Meador, or exceptional paintings by a few other Historic California artists. We do not do miscellaneous consignments but do represent artist estates. We do not provide appraisal services.

DO NOT CALL AND EXPECT A THOUGHTFUL ANSWER REGARDING YOUR PAINTING (especially, do not leave a voicemail message requiring us to phone you), ... INSTEAD, Please EMAIL US (Art@BodegaBayHeritageGallery.com) along with a high resolution jpeg image of your painting. Include the name of the artist, its title, dimensions and condition. Please include any history or provenance. Rather than responding off the cuff, in a timely fashion we will read your note, do our homework, and write back and let you know if we wish to acquire your painting or we may give you our our ideas on how best to market your painting through other resources.
